COVC Scholarships
One of the mandates of the Canadian Opera Volunteer Committee is to provide financial assistance to music students, particularly those attending the Opera Division of the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. In 1952, the COVC, then referred to as the Canadian Opera Women's Committee, introduced its tradition of awarding scholarships to opera students in the Opera Division. Since then, over 725 scholarships have been presented. These scholarships were made possible through the generous financial support of the COVC's benefactors, patrons, endowments, sustaining members and donors.
Scholarships are presented to deserving U of T Faculty of Music students each December at a special awards luncheon. The students, in turn, entertain COVC members and guests with a concert. Some scholarships are given as memorials to parents, spouses or other members of the family; some are given in memory of a special anniversary; still others are given by the COVC as the "Musical Director's Discretionary" scholarship. .
All donations to the COVC Scholarship Fund are gratefully accepted and are fully tax receiptable. Donors may wish to establish an endowment towards a scholarship or a scholarship may be created in tribute of a friend, relative, special occasion or in memory of a loved one. The minimum amount for a scholarship awarded in tribute is $1000. Please contact the COVC office for further details on how you can establish a COVC scholarship or contribute to the COVC scholarship programme.
